Stewards of the environment
MeWater exposes its youth to nature, the ocean, and parklands.
We believe that every child should have equal access to our environment and all that the Bay Area offers regardless of race or color.
The majority of the youth served by MeWater are children of color from the low-income neighborhoods of San Francisco, including the Bayview, Hunters Point, Visitacion Valley, and the Mission District. Schools in this catchment lack the necessary resources to provide experiential and hands-on learning of coastal and marine ecosystems.
MeWater provides local youth with a learning experience about marine life, coastal processes, and environmental protection, not available in their school programs.
MeWater’s focus on the mental and physical challenge of surfing is unique for youth isolated from the coastal experience. MeWater believes that the ocean is a powerful conduit to well-being.
Our curriculum builds future stewards of the environment:
• Ocean education & safe practices
• Education on coastal ecosystems
• Participation in beach clean-ups
• Education on marine life and preservation
When inner-city kids are allowed to break barriers and escape to the beach or park, nature can provide life-changing empowerment and growth.
MeWater focuses on building personal and social responsibility and encourages stewardship for coastal resources by providing sport and educational programming in an outdoor therapeutic setting. MeWater’s knowledgeable, sincere, and relatable staff offer effectively reach and engage youth in a manner consistent with their communities' cultural context and values.
